Less Stress With Chouest FIGHT, FLIGHT, OR GET IT RIGHT ! Fight or Flight ? Dealing with new or unfamiliar problems can be quite stressful, particularly when dealing with important legal rights. Stress is a very powerful force which is usually self-imposed. The perception of a situation and the need to determine how to deal with a problem can cause great stress. Because the same facts, when viewed or understood from a different point of view can be much less stressful, it is important to learn the facts and to know what can be expected. Our bodies are hard-wired by many thousands of years of evolution for survival. When we find ourselves in a threatening or stressful situation the hypothalamus area of the brain is stimulated, initiating a sequence of nerve cell firing and chemical release that prepares our body for fighting or running. In 1929 Harvard physiologist Walter Cannon described this as the "acute stress response" or the "fight or flight response". Most humans rarely encounter emergencies that require physical effort for survival, yet our biology still provides for them. Although the stress response is undoubtedly vital in life or death situations, it can be disruptive and damaging in modern society, particularly when dealing with a legal issue or dispute. Stress is often associated with situations that people find difficult to handle or understand. When faced with a stressful situation in today's society, neither fighting nor running are typically acceptable or appropriate. Experience, familiarity or simply knowing what to expect can help eliminate stress. Dealing with the problems, understanding them, solving, or eliminating them should all help eliminate the stress. Get It Right ! Many people do not know how to pronounce "Chouest". Chouest rhymes with "stress" (also with "best"). Less Stress with Chouest is an easy way to help people remember how to pronounce "Chouest", but it is also a commentary on the philosophy of the Chouest Law Firm. Many of our clients have not needed the services of an attorney before coming to see us. We attempt to view legal problems from the client's perspective and to advise our clients of the things that will help them understand the legal process or legal issues that they are dealing with. In dealing with insurance claims, we address the differences between the "normal world", where people are generally not required to prove things in order to be believed, and the "insurance company claims world", where many things will not be believed (even when they are entirely true) unless they are documented and proven. Less stress is what we strive to deliver, through qualified professional services, information, traditional counsel and advice. Chouest Law Firm is the trade name for Stephen M. Chouest & Associates, APLC. |
